Making changes to the system registry may be necessary for configuring the Windows operating system.

What is a system registry

A system registry is a database with the information about the settings and configurations of your computer and the operating system (Windows).

The registry contains the following information which is used by Windows:

  • User account information
  • information about installed applications and file types
  • Properties of folders and applications
  • Software configurations
  • Information about open ports

The registry has a tree structure: it has keys, subkeys and values. Find more information at the Microsoft support site
