In some situations, after working normally for a while, Windows may display a warning about limited network availability.

Symptoms

There is a yellow exclamation mark on the network icon in the Windows system tray. Most of the network connectivity seem to work, however, but some applications, such as Microsoft Outlook will not even try to connect to the mail server.

Diagnosis

This is caused by an issue in Windows although it may manifest itself more frequently when FREEDOME VPN is in use. Microsoft has included a fix to this issue in the Windows 10 version 1709 and newer. Unfortunately, installing version 1709 is not enough to solve the problem.

Solution

Make sure that you are running at least Windows 10 version 1709. To find out your Windows 10 version, select Start, enter winver and press Enter.

After that, fix the issue as follows:

  1. In the Windows search box next to the Start button, enter gpedit.msc and press Enter. This starts the Local Group Policy Editor.
  2. In the left panel of the Local Group Policy Editor, select Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Network Connectivity Status Indicator.
  3. In the right panel, double-click on Specify global DNS to open the Specify global DNS window.
  4. In the Specify global DNS window:
    1. Select Enabled.
    2. In Options, select the Use global DNS checkbox.
    3. To confirm the setting, select OK.

This will solve the problem with unnecessary warning about limited network availability.
