ESET home product in Limited Support status

This article applies to an ESET product version that is currently in Limited Support status and is scheduled to reach End of Life status soon.

Migrate from ESET NOD32 Antivirus for Linux Desktop to ESET Endpoint Antivirus for Linux.

To download and install ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Linux Desktop, follow the step-by-step instructions below:

I. Download ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Linux Desktop

32-bit Download 64-bit Download

  1. Click the appropriate link to download ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Linux Desktop. Which version (32-bit or 64-bit) of ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Linux Desktop should I download?
  1. Click Save when prompted and save the file to the Desktop. Once the download is complete, navigate to the Desktop or wherever you saved the installer file.

II. Install ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Linux Desktop

Supported Linux distributions

The Linux distributions supported by ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 for Linux Desktop are as follows: Red Hat, Mandriva, SUSE, Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora (32-bit). Installing on other Linux distributions may require the administrator to perform additional tasks due to the large variety of Linux distributions. These tasks may include the installation of missing packages or init script modification.

Additional requirements
  • kernel 2.6.x or later
  • GNU C Library 2.3 or later
  • GTK+ 2.6 or later
  • LSB 3.1 compatibility recommended
Installation errors

If you are attempting to install ESET NOD32 Antivirus for Linux Desktop, you may receive the error to install libc6:i386, /lib/ld-linux.so.2 during installation. To resolve this error, see the following Knowledgebase article:

If you receive the error message “Please install the following files or packages: /usr/lib/gconv/UTF-16.so,” see the following Knowledgebase article:

  1. Right-click the installer, select Properties and click the Permissions tab. Select the check box next to Allow executing file as program and then click Close.

    Enabling this permission is required in most instances to begin the installation and to prevent the error message “Could not display “/home/eset/Desktop/ueav.i386.en.linux“. There is no application installed for executable files”.

To set the permissions manually

To set the permissions manually using the terminal, enter:

chmod +x eset_nod32av_64bit_en_.linux

  1. Double-click the installer file. If you are logged in as a common user you will need to enter your password (sudo) or the root password (su) to continue.
  1. In the ESET NOD32 Antivirus Setup window, click Next.
  1. In the Important Information window, click Next.
  1. On the following screen, click I accept the terms in the License Agreement to accept the ESET NOD32 Antivirus License agreement. Click Next to continue.
  1. In the Installation Mode window, select Typical. Click Next to continue.
Custom installations

Selecting Custom install gives you access to additional configuration parameters such as adding a Proxy Server and setting Privileged users. If you select Typical (recommended) the additional configuration parameters can be accessed after installation is complete.

  1. Select Enable ThreatSense.Net Early Warning System in the ThreatSense.Net Early Warning System window, and click Next.

  1. In the Special Applications window, select your preferred option (see What is a potentially unwanted application?) and click Next.

  1. In the Ready to Install window, click Install.
  1. When the Completing the ESET NOD32 Antivirus Wizard window appears, click Finish to complete the installation.
  1. To complete the installation, a system restart is required. When prompted to restart, click Yes.
If the tray icon is not displayed in Ubuntu 14 – 16, 18-19

Run the command: sudo apt-get install libappindicator1

III. Activate ESET NOD32 Antivirus for Linux Desktop

To evaluate ESET NOD32 Antivirus before making a purchase
  1. Select Activate Trial License and click Next.
  2. Fill in your name and e-mail address, select your country.
  3. Click Activate.
NOTE

Your test license will be sent to the provided email address. Email delivery may take up to 20 minutes. Trial license can only be activated once per customer.

When you receive the Username and Password of your trial license:

  1. Open the main program window by clicking the ESET icon  in the notification area.
  2. Click Update, then Username and Password setup ….
  3. Enter your ESET-issued Username and Password, and click OK (make sure you have an active internet connection).
  4. Wait a few minutes for the latest Virus Signature Database Update to complete successfully.
To activate using Username and Password
  1. When your system has restarted, the Product Activation window will appear. Select Activate using a Username and Password and click Next.
If the application does not start

Your ESET NOD32 Antivirus product will automatically start after you log in to the system in all supported Linux distributions. If the application does not start, run it manually from the main menu by clicking Applications → System Tools → ESET NOD32 Antivirus. If you wish to start the application using the terminal, type:

/opt/eset/esets/bin/esets_gui

  1. Enter your ESET-issued Username and Password and click Activate.

Usernames and Passwords

Remember to enter your Username and Password exactly as they are written:

  • The username and password are case sensitive
  • The hyphen in the username is necessary
  • The password is ten characters long and all lowercase
  • If you are copying and pasting, make sure you don’t select an extra blank space
  • We do not use the letter L in passwords (use the number one (1) instead)
  • A big ‘0’ is the number zero (0); a little ‘o’ is the lowercase letter o

  1. If you entered your username and password correctly, your security product will automatically download the latest virus signature database update.
