First steps for solving Update Errors in Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac

As a rule of thumb, always check the frequency of update errors. Open the main Bitdefender window and click on Notifications in the left-side menu.

As long as there are only random update errors, followed by successful updates, it means that Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac is up-to-date and no further actions are required.

On the other hand, if Bitdefender still can’t update even after a 24-h wait, search for the error code in the table below to try and fix it.


Update error What it means and how to fix it
-1007 The update error -1007 is usually nothing more than a false alarm triggered by a temporary display glitch.

To check if the updates are performed successfully open the Notifications section of Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac. This will reveal all product events and if the last one is a successful update, then you have nothing to worry about. Your Bitdefender is up-to-date and no further action is required.

If the update errors -1007 persist and are shown in Bitdefender Notifications restart your Mac. Then try again to update Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac.

If there is any recurrence, reinstall Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac by following the steps from this article. During the installation, the old Bitdefender product is automatically uninstalled.

The update error codes -1011 and -1002 indicate that the Mac doesn’t have internet access. They are caused by an issue with the internet connection – it times out because it’s not at full strength, or it’s temporarily interrupted.

Usually, such an error message is followed by a successful update as soon as the Mac reconnects to the internet. To check this, open the Notifications section of Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac. This will reveal all product events and if the last one is a successful update, then you have nothing to worry about.

If it’s not, and you are using a Wi-Fi connection, try to connect your Mac to the internet using the cable, and perform a manual update.

If the error persists, try changing the DNS settings:

• click the Apple logo  located in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
• click the Network icon, then click Advanced at the bottom of the window
• open the DNS tab
• click the + button under DNS Servers and enter 1.1.1.1
• click + again and enter 1.0.0.1 (This is for redundancy.)
• click + again and enter 2606:4700:4700::1111
• click + again and enter 2606:4700:4700::1001 (This is for redundancy.)
• click OK, then click Apply

If the update still encounters errors, and you have a router firewall, 3rd party firewall apps, or network monitoring apps such as Little Snitch, temporarily disable them in order to see if Bitdefender updates successfully.

To turn off macOS firewall:

• click the Apple logo  located in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
• click the Security & Privacy icon, then access the Firewall tab
• if it’s enabled, click the small padlock in the bottom-left corner of the window
• enter your administrator password when prompted, then click Unlock
• click the button Turn Off Firewall

If the update error persists, check your proxy settings:

• click the Apple logo  located in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
• click the Network icon, then click Advanced at the bottom of the window
• open the Proxies tab
• disable Auto Proxy Discovery or any other options checked under Select a protocol to configure
• add *.bitdefender.com inside the Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains section, then click OK

These errors indicate that a proxy is active on the Mac and prevents Bitdefender from connecting to the update server.

Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac can update only through proxy servers that do not require authentication. You do not have to configure any program settings.

If you connect to the internet through a proxy server that requires authentication, you must switch to a direct internet connection regularly to obtain threat information updates:

• click the Apple logo  located in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
• click the Network icon, then click Advanced at the bottom of the window
• open the Proxies tab
• disable Auto Proxy Discovery or any other options checked under Select a protocol to configure
• add *.bitdefender.com inside the Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains section, then click OK

If the errors continue after turning off the proxy, reinstall Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac by following the steps from this article. During the installation, the old Bitdefender product is automatically uninstalled.

Both errors indicate that our update servers are in the middle of the synchronization process. When encountering one of these error codes, wait a few hours before trying to update Bitdefender again.

If the errors persist for more than 24 hours, and you have a router firewall, 3rd party firewall apps, or network monitoring apps such as Little Snitch, temporarily disable them in order to see if Bitdefender updates successfully.

To turn off macOS firewall:

• click the Apple logo  located in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
• click the Security & Privacy icon, then access the Firewall tab
• if it’s enabled, click the small padlock in the bottom-left corner of the window
• enter your administrator password when prompted, then click Unlock
• click the button Turn Off Firewall

If the errors persist, try changing the DNS settings:

• click the Apple logo  located in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences

These update errors appear when a Bitdefender daemon crashes or the update signatures cannot be overwritten.

Restarting the Mac should fix the issue.

-60 The update error -60 appears when the internet connection is very slow and causes a connection time-out with the Bitdefender update server.

Other error codes Here are some steps you can try that usually stop any other update errors.

Try to update again at a later time.

Restart the Mac then try again to update Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac.

Connect the Mac to another network:

A. If the updates are successful on other networks, the issue is with the default network configuration. Try changing the DNS and disabling the firewall.

Change the DNS:

• click the Apple logo  located in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
• click the Network icon, then click Advanced at the bottom of the window
• open the DNS tab
• click the + button under DNS Servers and enter 1.1.1.1
• click + again and enter 1.0.0.1 (This is for redundancy.)
• click + again and enter 2606:4700:4700::1111
• click + again and enter 2606:4700:4700::1001 (This is for redundancy.)
• click OK, then click Apply

Turn off the firewall:

• disable the router firewall, macOS firewall, 3rd party firewall apps, or network monitoring apps such as Little Snitch
• to turn off the macOS firewall first click the Apple logo  located in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences
• click the Security & Privacy icon, then access the Firewall tab
• if it’s enabled, click the small padlock in the bottom-left corner of the window
• enter your administrator password when prompted, then click Unlock
• click the button Turn Off Firewall

B. If the update errors persist on other networks reinstall Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac by following the steps from this article. During the installation, the old Bitdefender product is automatically uninstalled.
