Use this article if:

  • You want to activate the subscription for the McAfee software that came preinstalled on your new Microsoft Windows PC.

    McAfee strongly recommends that you register using your current email address. If you ever need to reset your password, we send an email to the address you used to register.

NOTE: If you can’t activate your subscription after following the advice in this article, contact Customer Service.

NOTE: In September 2020, McAfee updated the Windows security products with a new look and feel:

We’ll be rolling these changes out to all our Windows customers eventually, but not everyone will get the update immediately. We’ve updated this article with the new Windows interface steps. We’ve also retained the legacy Windows interface steps for customers who need them.

Follow these steps to set up your McAfee account, activate your software, and verify your subscription:

  • Step 1: Set up your McAfee account and activate your software
    1. Open the McAfee software that came preinstalled on your PC and access your account to view your subscription. To learn how to access your account, click one of the following options:

      1. Open your McAfee security software.
      2. Click the settings gear icon at the top-right of the screen.
      3. Under My info, click My account.
      4. You are taken to the McAfee website. Follow the steps below to complete the remaining steps.

      1. Open your McAfee security software.
      2. Click the My Info tab on the right-side.
      3. Click Go to my account.
      4. You are taken to the McAfee website. Follow the steps below to complete the remaining steps.
    2. At the McAfee website, type your email address, and then click Next.
      • If you already have an account, log in as usual.
      • If you do not have an account, create a strong password and click Next.

        NOTE: A strong password contains a combination of at least eight lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. For advice on creating a strong password, see the McAfee blog post on 15 tips to create a better password.

    3. When you are logged into your account, follow any prompts to complete activation of your McAfee software.

      If you have a problem activating your software, contact us using the link above. Make sure that you have the receipt for your computer purchase available when you contact us.

  • Step 2: Verify your subscription
    When activation is complete, use the Verify Subscription feature to sync your installed McAfee software with your new account:
  1. Right-click the McAfee icon in the notification area at the bottom of your Windows desktop next to the clock. Then, click Verify Subscription.
  2. Wait for the process to complete. When the process completes, your software and subscription information is synced and up to date.
  3. You can verify your subscription information at any through your account. Follow the steps shown above to log into your account.

    NOTE: If you have a problem verifying your subscription, contact Technical Support.
