  • Best practices for upgrading ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (EMSX) to version 8

Solution

  1. Uninstall EMSX version 4.x
  2. Install EMSX version 8

Existing customers with a valid business license for ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (EMSX) may upgrade to the latest version of the same product for free.

Before upgrading to version 8.x
  • ESET Mail Security 8 for Microsoft Exchange can only be managed using ESET PROTECT 8.0 and later. Upgrade to the latest version of ESET PROTECT.
  • Perform a System State backup on your Microsoft Exchange Server. See the Microsoft Knowledge Base article for assistance.
  • Make sure that you have your ESET Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange Server (EMSX) License Key available. If you have lost this information or need to request your license information, visit our Lost License page.
  • If you are installing EMSX on Windows Server 2016, Microsoft recommends to uninstall Windows Defender Features and withdraw from Windows Defender ATP enrollment to prevent problems caused by having multiple antivirus products installed on a machine.
  • When migrating EMSX from version 4.3/4.5 to the latest version, users will need to recreate all rules manually—there is no option to import user-defined rules.
  • Verify that you do not have any pending Windows Updates. If you do, this might cause the migration to fail. See this Knowledgebase article for more details.
Do not install over existing EMSX version 4.3/4.5

We do not recommend that you install over the existing EMSX as it may result in a blue screen error (BSOD).

I. Uninstall EMSX version 4.x

  1. Open ESET Mail Security.
  2. Press the F5 key to open Advanced Setup.
  3. Select Antivirus and antispyware from the Setup tree on the left, deselect Enable Self-defense and then click OK.
