You can activate Avira Exchange Security version 17 with your Avira Activation Code (OTC) as follows:
Right-click Basic configuration → then select All tasks → Avira license activation.
Enter your Avira OTC and your email address and click Activate license.
The license should be recognized after a restart of the following services via Windows Services:
- AntiVir Exchange
- AntiVir Exchange Control
In order to use a newer license with an older version of Avira Exchange, please copy the HBEDV.KEY license in the main directory of Avira Exchange Security:

- C:\Program Files\Avira\Avira Exchange Security\License
Avira Exchange Security, (Small Business Edition)
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Avira\Exchange Security SBE\License
Note
Throughout the installation of Avira Exchange Security, the file oem.lic will be also installed in the “License” directory. This file has to be preserved there because it creates the shortcut to the proper license file HBEDV.KEY.
A takeover of the oem.lic file from a different Exchange version is not possible.
The license should be recognized after a restart of the following services via the Windows Services:
- AntiVir Exchange
- AntiVir Exchange Control
You can also restart the services from the command prompt (Start -> Run)
net stop avexsctrl Confirm the question with "y". net start avexsctrl
To verify the takeover of the license navigate to the Avira Exchange Management Console → AntiVir Monitor → server → right-click on Server Name → Properties.
A new window will open and in the “General” tab under “License Information” the following entry should be displayed:
Mode: FULL
State: VALID
