By default, Smart Firewall blocks certain programs from accessing the Internet. Such programs might include certain streaming-media programs, network games, or custom business applications that are provided by your employer. If you know that the program’s Internet activity is not a threat to your security, you can unblock the program’s Internet access.
Sometimes when you open a freeware program that you downloaded from the Internet, some malicious websites could try to gain access to your computer. NortonLifeLock recommends you to keep the App URL Monitoring feature turned on. With App URL Monitoring turned on, Norton monitors all programs that are installed on your computer and block the malicious websites from accessing your computer. Allow Internet access for a blocked program
- Start Norton.
If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click .
- In the Norton main window, click .
- In the Settings window, click .
- On the Program Control tab, select the program that you want to allow access to the Internet.
- In the drop-down list for the program entry, click .
- Click .
By default, Norton firewall automatically configures Internet access settings for Web-enabled programs the first time that they run. When a program tries to access the Internet for the first time, Automatic Program Control creates rules for it.
However, Norton lets you can manually configure the Internet access settings for your programs.
Configure Internet access settings for your programs
STEP 1: Turn off Automatic Program Control
- Start Norton.
If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click .
- In the Norton main window, click .
- In the Settings window, click .
- In the Firewall settings window, click .
- In the Automatic Program Control row, move the switch to .
- In the confirmation window, click .
- In the Settings window, click , and then click .
STEP 2: Configure the Internet access settings for a program
- Start your program.
When the program tries to access the Internet, Norton prompts you with a firewall alert.
- In the Firewall Alert window, in the Options drop-down list, select an action.
You can allow, block, or manually create a program rule.
