If you are running the AVG Remote Administration in an isolated network (the AVG Admin Server has no access to the Internet) and you wish to use the centralized updates, you can use the following steps.

You will need to download the update files manually on the server and run a dedicated utility that will generate files that will allow stations to update.

Please proceed as follows:

1. Modify the AVG Admin Server configuration file to enable “offline mode”:

  • Open the following file in some text editor (notepad). The default installation folder for the file is:
    “C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG Admin\Server\avgadmsv.ini”
  • Add this line at the end of the file:
    DisableUpdateDownloading=1
  • Save the file and restart AVG Admin Server to load the new settings.
Start AVG Admin Server Monitor -> Click the “Stop server” button -> Confirm stopping of the Server -> Click the “Start server” button.

2. At the AVG Admin Server, determine where the updates are stored:

  • Right-click on the AVG Admin Server taskbar icon. Click “Open AVG Admin Server Monitor”
    Open Admin Server Monitor
  • Click “Server Settings” and open the “UpdateProxy” TabView Downloads File Location
  • In the example above, the updates are stored on c:\avgupdates

3. Download the Genctf utility:

4. Download the off-line updates from: http://www.avg.com/za-en/download-update-2013 (It is best to download all 10 Bin files)

5. Run the genctf utility in that folder.

  • Use this command in the command line (or create a batch file with it).
  • NB: The blank space and dot at the end are required!:
    genctf2013.exe .
  • This will create two CTF files in the folder – avginfowin.ctf and avginfoavi.ctf. AVG client stations can now update through the AVG Admin Server.

6. Repeat step 4 and 5 periodically to provide the latest updates to the workstations.

NB: After downloading new update files to the server. I.e. run the utility every time you place new files in the folder to generate up to date CTF files. Otherwise stations will not recognize the new update files there.

Note: The Genctf utility needs the libraries from VisualC++ redistributable package. Those libraries are a part of the AVG Client installation. In case that the AVG Client is not installed on your server, please download and install this package from the Microsoft’s website at:
