The scariest threat on the landscape today, Ransomware effectively holds files on a computer to ransom. Once on a computer, ransomware will encrypt all personal files, making them impossible to access. Once this has been completed, a screen will pop-up explaining that to gain access to files, the user needs to make a ransom payment.

Even those who have made a payment have found they do not regain access to their files. Regrettably, the encryption adopted by ransomware developers is of high quality, and there is very little chance of regaining access to files.

Sometimes the ransomware will display a time limit, if payment isn’t made within a certain number of days the ransom doubles, if not paid after that time files are deleted. It is a ruthless, horrible situation to be in.

Signs of Ransomware

  • Be wary of unexpected emails from unknown sources, especially if they contain links or attachments
  • Be especially careful with Microsoft Office email attachments or downloadable files that require enabling of Macros to view contents

How to stay protected against Ransomware

Using TotalAV Real-Time Protection will prevent Ransomware from getting on your computer in the first place. But the single most important thing you can do, is back up your files regularly. Whether that is with an external hard drive that isn’t permanently plugged into your computer or using a cloud backup service. Should Ransomware attack, you will still have access to your precious files.
