Any Antivirus with Real Time Protection is running quite an intensive process in the background to keep a computer protected. Having two or more Antivirus applications running Real Time Protection at the same time is really not wise at all. Although it might seem like this provides better protection, it actually does quite the opposite; the two services will knock heads and prevent each other from providing any protection at all. Windows doesn’t handle multiple applications accessing (or scanning) files at the same time.

If you are a paid user of TotalAV, stick to using TotalAV Real Time Protection and either disable the other Antivirus Real Time or uninstall it completely.

By far though, Windows Defender is the most common Antivirus app that can at times conflict. It comes pre-installed on Windows and in many cases, it plays nice and turns itself off when another Antivirus app such as TotalAV is installed. It is worth checking it is turned off though by doing the following:

  1. Click the start button / windows icon in the bottom left of the screen

  2. Click the cog / gear icon

  3. In the Settings window, click the tile labelled Update & Security

  4. In the sidebar, click Windows Security, then in the right pane click Virus & threat protection

  5. The scroll down and click Virus & threat protection settings

  6. Disable Windows Defender’s real-time scanning
