If you need to replace the server running or want to move Malwarebytes Management Console to a new server, you can migrate the Malwarebytes Management Console. Migrating the Malwarebytes Management Console allows you to preserve clients, policies, and other settings you may have configured.

It is highly recommended that you upgrade your Malwarebytes Management Console to the latest version before you begin a migration. Refer to the article Upgrade the Malwarebytes Management Console

How you migrate the Malwarebytes Management Console depends on whether you are using an embedded or external database. Embedded databases typically use SQL Express, where external databases use a dedicated Microsoft SQL server.

For embedded databases

  1. Log on to the server currently running Malwarebytes Management Console.
  2. Use the Data Backup and Restoration tool to backup the Malwarebytes Management Console database.
    Refer to the article Backup or restore the Malwarebytes Management Console database‌.
  3. Save the backup to the new server’s local hard drive.
    Do not save the backup to a network drive. The Data Backup and Restoration tool is not able to access network drives.
  4. On the new server, install the Malwarebytes Management Console.
    See instructions in the article Install the Malwarebytes Management Console‌.
  5. Use the Data Backup and Restoration tool to restore the Malwarebytes Management Console database.
  6. The Data Backup and Restoration tool will restore all of the old server’s previous settings, including the old hostname and IP. If these values are changing on the new server, they will need to be edited to reflect the new server’s values. There are two places where this needs to be addressed:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes Management Server > Server Configuration and re-input the new server’s info.
    • Next go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Management Server\PackageTemplate and edit the file sccomm.xml to contain the correct server address.
  7. Uninstall the Malwarebytes Management Console on the old server.
    You can uninstall the Management Console from the Windows Control Panel.

For external databases

  1. Uninstall the Malwarebytes Management Console from the server you are migrating from.
    You can uninstall the Management Console from the Windows Control Panel.
  2. On the new server, install the Malwarebytes Management Console. You must use the same version on your new server as the one from your old server. Do not install a newer console version and attempt to connect to the database from an older version!

  3. Connect your external database to the new server. All of your existing policies and configuration settings will automatically re-apply.

Change the IP address or hostname

If your new server’s IP address or hostname is different from the old server, you must reflect these changes in the Malwarebytes Management Server. Refer to the article Change the Malwarebytes Management Server’s IP address or hostname for further instructions.

Reinstall managed clients

Confirm your clients can still contact the Malwarebytes Management Console. As a test, you can initiate a Client Push Install to your computers. For instructions, refer to the article Install managed clients with the Malwarebytes Management Console‌.
