Summary
Stinger is a standalone utility created by McAfee to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full antivirus protection. Instead, it is a tool that helps you clean an infected computer of specific known threats.

Stinger uses a McAfee technology called Global Threat Intelligence (GTI) to identify dangerous websites. GTI constantly monitors websites around the world for malicious content.

When you download Stinger, you can enable GTI in the following way:

  1. Click Preferences.
  2. Select the preferred GTI sensitivity level.
NOTE: If you select High or Very High, McAfee Labs recommends that you set the On virus detection action to Report only for the first scan. Setting this option makes sure that valid files are not accidentally removed.
Solution
To download and run the Stinger, follow these steps:

  1. To start, go to the Stinger download page.
  2. Click the bold Download Stinger link. This downloads the most commonly used version:

    IMPORTANT:

    • Do not select the ePO versions of Stinger. These are for use in business environments.
    • If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, click Download Stinger for x64 systems.
  3. Click Download Now.
  4. Save Stinger to a convenient location, such as your desktop.
  5. Right-click the Stinger application that you just downloaded.
  6. Select Run as Administrator.
  7. If you see a Windows security warning:
    • Click YesContinue, or Run.
  8. Accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
  9. Click Customize my scan to add additional drives or directories (only the C: drive is scanned by default).
  10. Click Scan. Stinger repairs all infected files found.

IMPORTANT: If Stinger repairs any infected files, expand the section below for important information.

If Stinger repairs any infected files on your PC and you have Windows System Restore enabled, you need to take additional action. This is because your System Restore backup files might also be infected.

    You need to:

    • Temporarily turn off System Restore. When you turn off System Restore, all backup files are deleted, including any that are infected.
    • Wait a short time, then turn System Restore back on. After disabling System Restore, wait for at least 10 minutes to ensure that all backup files have been deleted, then turn System Restore back on.

When System Restore is re-enabled, it starts creating new restore points to enable you to use the System Restore feature in the future.

Step 1: Turn System Restore off:
NOTE: These steps can be used for Windows 108, and 7.

    1. Click the Start  button on the bottom left of your Windows desktop.
    2. In the search box:
      1. Type control panel.
      2. Press ENTER.
    3. Click System.
    4. In the left pane, click System Protection.
    5. If prompted, type your password or click Continue.
    6. Click the disk on which you want to turn off System Restore:

    7. Click Configure.
    8. Click Disable system protection.
    9. Click OK. System Restore is now turned off.

Step 2: Turn System Restore back on:
IMPORTANT: Wait at least 10 minutes after turning off System Restore before doing these steps. This will ensure that all infected backup files are deleted.

    1. Follow the steps above to open the System Properties dialog.
    2. Click the disk on which you want to turn on System Restore.
    3. Click Configure.
    4. Click Turn on system protection.
    5. Click OK. System Restore is now turned on.
