Summary
At McAfee, we continually review and adjust our product portfolio to best meet the needs of our customers. For this reason, we have made the strategic decision to discontinue some of the features that are currently being offered in our McAfee Mobile Security (MMS) apps for both Android and iOS.

You can learn about the features that we’re discontinuing below.

This article also includes details about:

  • When these changes become effective
  • Suggested alternatives for some of the removed features

We have also included links to other articles that provide detailed information about each change. This information includes details about any action that you need to take for each change, and when you need to take it.

TIPS:

  • When McAfee Mobile Security updates on your device, its name changes to McAfee Security.
  • The feature changes shown below occur when the updated app is installed to your device. You can continue using these features until your app is updated.

Products affectedThe changes described in this article apply to the following products:

  • McAfee Mobile Security for iOS and Android (standalone)
  • McAfee Mobile Security for iOS and Android (included as part of McAfee LiveSafe and McAfee Total Protection)

McAfee Mobile Security is being updated on different dates for different countries. You might need to take action if you use any of the features being removed. But the dates that you need to take action by vary by country. See the PDF document attached to the end of this article for more information.

NOTES:

  • The PDF contains the dates by which you need to take action, if needed, by country.
  • The features shown below are discontinued when you update to the new version of McAfee Mobile Security. The new version of MMS becomes available on the dates shown in the document.
  • If you remain on the current version, and do not update, the features remain in your app and can still be used.

Media and Contacts Backup:

The Backup feature is being removed. Backup helped you back up your device’s contacts, photos, and videos. This content could then be accessed, or exported from, your McAfee Mobile Security Account.

See TS103143 – Feature Removal: McAfee Mobile Security Backup for more details about this feature removal.

App Lock and Guest Mode:

App lock is being removed. App lock helped you to lock your sensitive apps with your own unique six-digit PIN for extra security. Guest Mode allowed you to hide your private apps when you share your device with someone else. Only the apps that you choose to share are visible in Guest Mode.

See TS103158 – Feature Removal: App Lock and Guest Mode for Android for more details about this feature removal.

Anti-Theft:

Anti-Theft is being removed. Anti-Theft helped you to remotely lock or wipe data from your device if it is lost. This feature protects your device after the device administrator account is activated.

In 2020, we migrated McAfee Mobile Security away from its own PIN lock, to the native device PIN lock, but the ability to track and remotely lock a device remained.

Although these features are being removed, the Android operating system provides alternative capabilities. To learn more, see this Google document on how to lock or erase your lost phone or computer.

Battery Booster:

Battery Booster is being removed. Battery Booster helped to maximize battery life by ‘tuning’ your device. For example, by automatically adjusting screen brightness, timeout, and other settings.

Although Battery Booster is being removed, the Android operating system provides alternative capabilities. To learn more, see this Google document on how to get the most life from your Android device’s battery.

Memory Booster and Storage Cleaner:

Memory Booster is being removed. Memory Booster helped to improve the performance of your device by freeing up memory from background apps.
Storage Cleaner is also being removed. Storage Cleaner optimized your device storage by identifying, and helping you remove, ‘clutter’.

Although these features are being removed, the Android operating system provides alternative capabilities. To learn more, see this Google document on how to free up space.

Widget:

The Widgets feature is being removed. Widgets are ‘shortcuts’ that become available when you enable the Android Accessibility option. Widgets can then be used as shortcuts to many of the McAfee Mobile Security features.

McAfee Mobile Security for iOS is being updated to a different schedule to the Android version. You might need to take action if you use any of the features being removed. If you need to take action, do so before the dates shown in the PDF document attached to the end of this article.

NOTES:

  • The features shown below are no longer available when you update to the new version of McAfee Mobile Security after the date shown in the attached PDF.
  • If you remain on the current version and do not update, the features remain in your app and can still be used.

Media Vault:

The Media Vault is being removed. Media Vault allowed you to store your images and video in a secure location, away from prying eyes.

See TS103144 – Feature Removal: McAfee Mobile Security Media Vault for iOS for more details about the removal of this feature.

Contacts Backup:

Contacts Backup is being removed. Contacts Backup helped you back up your device’s contacts, photos, and videos. This content could then be accessed, or exported from, your McAfee Mobile Security Account.

See TS103143 – Feature Removal: McAfee Mobile Security Backup for more details about the removal of this feature.

Anti-Theft:

The Anti-Theft feature is being removed. Anti-Theft allowed for continuous tracking and viewing of the last location of your device, and also provided an alarm feature.

Although this feature is being removed, iOS provides alternative capabilities. To learn more, see this Apple document on if your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen.
