Computer, Network, and Web security options protect against a range of threats. For best results, you should keep all of the Advanced settings turned on.

Configure advanced settings

  1. Start Norton.

If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. On the Norton main window, double-click Security and then click Advanced.
  3. In the Advanced window, check that the following features are turned on.
    • Auto-Protect

Runs in the background while you work to continuously scan for viruses and other threats. If you turn off Auto-Protect, Norton automatically turns off SONAR Protection and Download Intelligence.

    • SONAR Protection

Provides real-time protection against threats and proactively detects unknown security risks. You cannot access this option when Auto-Protect is turned off.

    • Smart Firewall

Monitors network activities between your computer and other computers and blocks unauthorized traffic.

    • Intrusion Prevention

Scans network traffic for the attack signatures that attempt to exploit a vulnerability in your operating system or in an installed program.

    • Email Protection

Blocks threats from email attachments. Your Norton service automatically configures your email to protect against viruses and other security threats.

    • Browser Protection

Blocks malware that attempts to exploit vulnerabilities in your web browser. It secures your sensitive information and prevents attackers from accessing your system.

    • Download Intelligence

Protects you from unsafe files that you download from your browser. It lets you know if a downloaded file is safe to open or install. You cannot access this option when Auto-Protect is turned off.
