Use this article if:

You see unexpected alerts that your McAfee product subscription has expired, or is about to expire. These messages might appear even when your subscription is not near the expiration date.

Unexpected alerts can include:

  • Your subscription ended x days ago
  • Your McAfee subscription has expired
  • Your McAfee antivirus protection is over
  • Your subscription ends in x days
  • Your McAfee subscription is about to expire
  • Your trial ends in x days
  • Protect what you value. Renew your subscription.

If you think your subscription is valid, but you are still seeing an unexpected message, click to expand the section below.

Before you start:

  • Some of the steps below require a restart. Bookmark or favorite this article so that you can easily get back to it.
  • Save all open files, and close all programs.
  • Have your McAfee My Account user name and password available.
  • Make sure that the device that you are installing to has a good internet connection. A good connection makes sure that the McAfee subscription database is up to date. To test your connection, perform the following steps on the device where you see the subscription alert:
  1. Open your web browser and try to go to www.google.com.
  2. Perform a search, and verify that the result pages load quickly.
  3. If the search result pages do not load, or are very slow to load, restart your device. Then try again.
  4. If the search result pages load normally, continue with the steps below.

Step 1: Verify your subscription

  1. Right-click the McAfee M-shield M-Shield icon icon next to your PC’s clock. If the McAfee icon is not visible, click the show more icons button.
  2. Click Verify Subscription.
  3. Click Yes if you are prompted to allow the app to make changes to your device.
  4. Wait for the process to complete:
    • If the correct expiration date is displayed, the issue is solved.
    • If the product still shows as expired, or an expiration date from a previous subscription is displayed, go to Step 2:

Step 2: Run the McAfee Software Install Helper tool

  1. ​​Download and run the McAfee Software Install Helper tool.
  2. Type your wp-signup.phped email address and password, and then click Login.

    NOTE: If you can’t remember your password, click Forgot Password? and follow the prompts.

  3. Click Start, accept the License Agreement, and follow the prompts. Your installed McAfee software might be uninstalled and reinstalled to resolve the issue. So, the tool might take 15 minutes or more to complete.

    When the McAfee Software Install Helper tool completes, your issue is resolved.

If the tool shows an error or shows that your McAfee product isn’t installed, contact support. Use the link shown in the tool when you see the failure.

Step 1: Verify your McAfee product subscription on Windows 7, Vista, or XP

  1. Right-click the McAfee M-shield  icon next to your PC’s clock. If the McAfee icon is not visible, click the show more icons button.
  2. Click Verify Subscription.
  3. Click Yes if you are prompted to allow the app to make changes to your device.
  4. Wait for the process to complete:
    • If the correct expiration date is displayed, the issue is solved.
    • If the product still shows as expired, or an expiration date from a previous subscription is displayed, go to Step 2:

Step 2: Run the Subscription Repair tool

  • For Windows 7:
  1. Click to open the McAfee Subscription Repair Tool page.
  2. Click Download.
  3. Save the SubDBFix.exe file to your desktop.
  4. Right-click SubDBFix.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  5. If prompted, click Agree or Continue on the security warnings.
  6. When requested, type in your McAfee account credentials (the email address and password you wp-signup.phped with).
  7. Select the McAfee product installed on your computer, and click Next.
  8. After the tool completes, restart your computer. Your issue is resolved.
  9. If the product still shows as expired, or an expiration date from a previous subscription is displayed, go to Step 3:
  • For Windows XP or Vista:
    NOTE: Microsoft extended support for Windows XP SP3 in 2014. See the Related Information section of this article for more details.

    1. Click to download the McAfee Subscription Repair Tool for Vista and XP. The tool downloads automatically.
    2. Double-click SubDBFix.exe.

      NOTE: For Windows Vista, right-click the file and select Run as Administrator.

    3. When requested, type your McAfee account credentials (the email address and password you used to wp-signup.php).
    4. Select the McAfee product installed on your computer, and click Next.
    5. After the tool completes, restart your computer. Your issue is resolved.
    6. If the product still shows as expired, or an expiration date from a previous subscription is displayed, go to Step 3:

Step 3: Check the subscription expiration date and email address

  1. Sign into home.mcafee.com.
  2. Under My Account, select the computer that runs your McAfee software.
  3. Make a note of the subscription information shown.
  4. Open your McAfee product.
  5. Click Your Subscription.
  6. Verify that the Expiration Date, and email address match the values shown under My Account.
  7. If your product has not expired, and is not about to expire, go to Step 4.
  8. If the information does not match, contact Customer Service.

Step 4: Reinstall your software
We are unable to repair your installed subscription, so you must uninstall your McAfee software and reinstall it.

  1. To uninstall a currently installed McAfee product, follow Steps 1 and 2 in TS101331 – How to remove McAfee products from a PC that runs Windows.
  2. After following the steps in TS101331, run the Pre-Install tool:
    1. Download the Pre-Install Tool.

      NOTE: Save the file to a temporary location, such as your desktop.

    2. Double-click the Pre-Install_Tool.exe file, and follow the prompts.
    3. Read the warning message, and click OK to agree to the changes.
  3. After the Pre-Install Tool completes:
    1. Click OK.
    2. Click Close.
    3. Restart your computer.
  4. Install your McAfee software following the steps in TS100342 – How to download and install McAfee consumer products.

If you have a problem uninstalling or reinstalling, or if you still have a subscription issue after reinstallation, contact Technical Support

This issue mainly occurs with McAfee Mobile Security (MMS). Follow these steps if you use MMS:
  1. Go to the McAfee Mobile Security website.
  2. Sign in with:
    • Your mobile number and six-digit PIN
      Or
    • The email address associated with your McAfee account and your password
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Under Subscription, check the:
    • Type of Subscription
    • Subscription expiry date
  • If the subscription information is correct:
    • Verify that you have the latest McAfee Mobile Security installed on your device. You can download it from the Apple App Store, or the Google Play Store.
    • Update the subscription on the device:
      1. Tap Menu.
      2. Tap Settings.
      3. Select Subscription Info/Update Subscription.
    • For tablet devices, make sure that the account email address for your McAfee account is used when you activate the application on the device.
  • If the subscription information is incorrect:
  1. Go to the McAfee Contact Us page.
  2. Select your Country.
  3. Select Account Information and Other.
  4. Select your preferred support option (chat or phone, depending on the hours and location).
  5. Be prepared to provide the following information to your Support Agent:
    • For a purchase made through the McAfee homepage, provide your Order number and your McAfee account email address.
    • For a purchase made through Google Checkout, provide the Google Checkout Order number, and your email address or phone number.

These subscription-related messages can occur for several reasons. For example:
  • Your subscription has expired or is about to expire. You have not renewed your subscription or purchased a new subscription.
  • Your subscription has expired or is about to expire. You have renewed your subscription or purchased a new subscription, but the subscription has not been synced to your product. This problem can happen for different reasons, including:
    • There is a problem with your internet connection.
    • Your computer has incorrect settings.
    • There is a problem with your account.
    • There is a problem with your information in the McAfee database.
Supported Windows versions
McAfee security products for Windows (such as LiveSafe, and Total Protection) are fully supported on the following Windows versions:
  • Microsoft Windows 10
  • Microsoft Windows 8.1
NOTES:

Older Windows versions

CAUTION: Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7.xWindows XP, or Windows Vista. Your PC could be at risk from new threats if you are using any of these Windows versions. McAfee strongly recommends that you upgrade your PC’s operating system to a newer version as soon as possible.

McAfee support for McAfee products running on Windows 8.0 or 7.x is limited:

  • Windows 8.0, and 7.x
    • McAfee provides only “best effort” support for McAfee products installed on Windows 8.0 and 7.x.
    • The current McAfee Windows security products do not support Windows 8.0 or 7.x. Version 16.0.31 is the most recent McAfee Windows security product version to support Windows 8.0 and 7.x.
    • For details about Microsoft’s End of Support for Windows 7.x, see Microsoft’s advisory.

McAfee provides no support for McAfee products running on Windows XP, or Vista:

  • Windows XP, and Vista
    • McAfee security products are unable to get updates on Windows XP, or Vista. If you are using one of these Windows versions, and you want to run McAfee software on your PC, you must upgrade your PC’s operating system to a newer version.
