The default device security settings provide complete protection for your computer. You need not change the settings unless there is a specific need.

If you want to adjust the settings, you can access most of the features from the Settings window. You can use the On/Off switch to turn on or turn off a feature. For a few features, you must move the slider to your preferred setting. You can also use the Configure option to set up the options of each feature. You can change the product’s settings to fit your work environment.

Important pointers:

  • You need to log in to your computer with an Administrator user account to change the product settings.
  • For Standard user accounts, some of the settings may appear disabled (grayed out).
  • If you are an administrator, keep in mind that the changes that you make apply to everyone who uses the computer.

Configure Internet access settings for your programs

By default, Smart Firewall blocks certain programs from accessing the Internet. However, you can manually configure the Internet access settings for your programs to allow Internet access.

STEP 1: Turn off Automatic Program Control

  1. Start Norton.

If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. In the Norton main window, click Settings.
  3. In the Settings window, click Firewall.
  4. In the Firewall settings window, click Advanced Program Control.
  5. In the Automatic Program Control row, move the On/Off switch to Off.
  6. In the confirmation window, click Yes.
  7. In the Settings window, click Apply, and then click Close.

STEP 2: Configure the Internet access settings for a program

  1. Start your program.

When the program tries to access the Internet, Norton prompts you with a firewall alert.

  2. In the Firewall Alert window, in the Options drop-down list, select an action.

You can allow, block, or manually create a program rule.

  3. Click OK.

Configure access settings for your webcam

Norton SafeCam enables you to be secure when you use webcam devices on the Internet. It prevents applications and malware from accessing your computer’s webcam without your consent. By default, Norton SafeCam is turned on and allows trusted programs to access the webcam.

With Norton SafeCam enabled, untrusted applications cannot capture images or videos and send the content outside of your computer to compromise your privacy. It constantly monitors applications that have access to your webcam and notifies you if an unwanted program tries to obtain access to the webcam. You have the option to then allow or block access to the application.

Configure SafeCam settings to allow a program to access your webcam

  1. Start Norton.

If you see the My Norton window, next to Device Security, click Open.

  2. In the Norton main window, click Settings.
  3. In the Settings window, click SafeCam.
  4. In the SafeCam settings window, in the Access tab, select the program for which you want to configure webcam access.
  5. From the Access drop-down list, select one of the following:
    • Allow
    • Block
    • Ask

If you choose Ask, Norton prompts you with an alert whenever the program tries to access the webcam.

  6. Click Apply, and then click Close.

Protect your settings from unauthorized access

  6. In the Set Password window, type a password and confirm.
